Today I will present Giles Thurston the author of The Photographer’s Eye. Giles is a UK photographer focussing on human interactions with the landscape.
Oh yes! I have a camera bag full of film gear squirrelled away out of reach of any sudden impulsive office clear out of 'old rubbish' by my partner too! 😂
I have given away books (novels, travelguides etc) to make room for new photobooks so my husband won‘t notice. I know he would never say anything, but here I am pretending 🤣🤣🤣 we are hilarious bunch 😉
I love that you admit you have too much gear, and at the same time use your iphone just as often - and with great results! I know from experience people often can't tell the difference.
A great interview with Giles, really well articulated - I did wonder if you were inspired by Paul Harts work Giles, his Fens series is superb. As for gear, it is hard to tell the difference on screen between your i-phone images and the rest...you produce great results with all of them!
For digital images, then I agree the iPhone does really well. I’m sure it would soon fall down on prints against the others but only at a certain size. The combination of my iPhone and Lightroom Mobile is amazing in my book.
And yes Paul’s work is wonderful. I am desperately trying to find a copy of his Farmed book but it’s out of print 😢
Re Pauls work - me too funnily enough, and Truncated! I've got Drained and Fragile - both superb books, beautifully presented but Farmed seems to be around £200 for as new copies...hmm!
Thanks, Liam. That is so kind of you to say. I haven’t been trying to emulate him but as a photographer that inspires me I guess that would make sense. Would love to have half the talent he has.
Great interview, gents, thank you. Three great images, too! I particularly love that first image - beautiful light.
Has your wife sussed on and read this, yet? She must have heard the noise of all us lot chortling on here by now🤣. You do, of course, have my utmost sympathy and understanding in this matter. Sadly I'm a lot cause as my wife already knows how bad I am for gear..🥴😄
Seriously, though, gear aside, I think your work is fab.
Excellent interview! I’ve appreciated Giles’ work for most of this year, so it’s great to read more about him and his approach to photography. Thank you both!
have way too many cameras, lens and bags. I won't admit how many in case my wife reads this.“
„I won't admit how many in case my wife reads this.“ - that made me giggle. Haven‘t we been all there? 🤣
I lied to my daughter about having 'exchanged' my old Canon for my current Fuji 😂🤫
🤣🤣🤣

Come on, they all know 😃
Another lovely interview!

Thanks, that is so kind of you to say. I love my cameras but also really enjoy the results I can get with my trusty iPhone.

Thanks, Lin and that is very kind of you to say.

Likewise I have the other three but am continuing my search for Farmed. One day … maybe 🤞🏻
Lovely and a delightful interview both of you!
Thanks, Shital. That is very kind of you to say 🙏🏻😊
I can see Sean Tucker in your work Giles. Great interview
Thanks, Liam. That is so kind of you to say. I haven’t been trying to emulate him but as a photographer that inspires me I guess that would make sense. Would love to have half the talent he has.
I used to watch a lot of his videos, he has a unique a philosophical way describing photography
Indeed. His Parable series of magazines/books are brilliant. Blending his photography with his writing. Highly recommend them.

Thanks, Ralph and I’m not sure if she has seen it yet but likewise, thinks I’m a lost cause anyway. 😂
So pleased you enjoyed the interview and many thanks for your kind words and support. It’s very much appreciated 😊
At one point I had so many camera bags, I ended up giving them away. I only have 6 now. lol. But when it comes to accessories, I have no comments. 🤣
😂 I feel your pain
The pain is real🤣🤣 I may not buy any more accessories, but I do have a large container filled with them.
Sounds like you need a new bag to put them all in 🤔😂
Don't put ideas into my head, yesterday I was looking at the new Tenba range.. lol
Tenba you say? 🤔 La-la la-la I can’t hear you 🙉😂
Great interview. Thanks
Thanks, Marcel. Glad you enjoyed it.
Good to meet you, fellow Ricoh GR3 shooter! Great point of view of the world😀

Another wonderful interview and new to me photographer. Thanks for sharing! Love the images, and his positive take on using the iPhone camera. :)
