A few weeks ago, somebody here on Substack mentioned the XP-2 film from Ilford. As strange as it might sound, I never shot a roll of XP-2. So why not give it a try?
Bought a roll, loaded into Minolta X-700 (coupled with a MD 50mm f/1.7 lens) and I started the experiment. I’ve tried to used it in different light situations in order to make a better impression. The results can be seen bellow and it is worth noting that none of the photos is post processed in any way.
My conclusions? I love it when used in bright light but most films are good in this situation. The XP-2 has a strong contrast but not as strong as Tri-X and that’s why is lovely; also it has a fine grain which is beautiful. It behaves very well in contrasty situations by randering dark tones and highlights. On a dull day, it’s just ok, not the worst, not the best (see the photo with the cow). For this situation, I think HP5 is better but that is just me.
Will I use it again? Yes, no doubt about it; I even might buy it in 120 format.
you must try it in medium format. it's crazy good, and actually cheaper than the 135 version. yeah, clearly less images, but the quality, uhhhhaaa!!! nice shots, by the way ;)
Nice gentle contrast. I need to try the film.
