It seems that every pleasure I indulge myself in needs some sort of explanation and a reasoning, especially since the pleasure is mundane, strange, silly or childish.
I had a colleague who was infatuated with sand. Whenever he (or one of his friends, relatives or co-workers) went on holiday to somewhere he'd never visited, he'd ask us to take a 35mm film canister with us and bring it back full of local sand. In the majority of cases, we did as he requested. However, we'd occasionally present him with a sample obtained from a local builder's merchants....
I never visited his house but, apparently, he had some small, glass, display cases (a bit like thin fish tanks) in which he used to create layers / patterns using the sand. He showed us some photos and they actually looked nice, with all different colours and textures. Like you say, it takes all sorts...
Picking up rocks/pebbles on the beach is one of the sweetest ways to kill yourself. It's such an addictive activity, that you won't notice the sun slamming you in the back of your head, the dehydration, the exaust... is this paradise, already?...
Rocks rock! I love to photograph them and we often go on family fossil hunts on the Yorkshire coast. Maybe it’s the connection to deep time, every rock has a story. Have you read
Robert Macfarlane, Underworld - well worth a look.
Great photos, enjoyable words, thank you. Speaking of animate and inanimate, now there's a fuzzy line, if indeed there really is one, but that's just me lol😏😊
I enjoy rock and stones myself (and the geology in the earth). I have, now and again, brought found rocks back from vacay, first giving them homes in empty flower pots outside and now many live along the edge of one side of the house (an attempt to keep only the couple of blueberry bushes growing and avoiding grass — not completely successful). A varied selection.
I remember a supremely long hike up, through, up some more and then down in the Dolomites a number of years ago where my backpack got heavier and heavier with the addition of cool rocks, many split with my better half’s geology hammer, revealing little crystal deposits.
That said, I don’t obsess over rocks, they are just something I like when in the mood. Well, I also am not overly fascinated with fire but there was a time in my youth where my bangs got singed more than once, staring into a candle flame.
Maybe it’s just curiosity and interest that leads to our different interests in the natural world — those traits are also good for survival.
Thank you both for this. As a kid, I was almost always putting interesting rocks in my pocket and still do. I find that they ground me (no pun intended). They are always a reminder of earth, nature, the environment. For me, maybe they hold some degree of mystery: where did they come from, how long have they been here, what is their story? Anyway - thanks again for the words and photos.
A big bravo to you too. Great post! Although I admire mountains and rocks (also always pick a couple from places that are important to me), I seem to be also drawn to climb them (mostly under the influence of my husband which is a riddle to me because normally I don’t follow what he says). Maybe I do it because I want to prove myself that I can. That is what happened these holidays when without knowing it I found myself doing an hike of almost 7 hours, through a part of the dolomites. I’m putting together a post on this, so soon you will know how an admiration can turn into a nightmare experience!😁
Great fun, you two! I love the idea of playing with the geologists' heads and deliberately moving stones to different places! Lovely photographs!
thank you!
Thank you. Perfectlight photographs are a great inspiration
Rock on!
we will rock you!
Nice one!!

"every rock has a story", i like that
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll definitely check that out.

If there’s a line, I choose to ignore it!

Very interesting post! More rock images!!
thank you! promise there will be more 😉
Excellent!
I love rocks because unlike people, they never ask to be moved. Until airport security finds them in your backpack.
thank you! unfortunately the airport security have a job to do 😁
These rocks are pretty wild. Great separation.
thank you!
Childish memory: a rhyme.
Sticks and stones may break my bones
but words will never hurt me.
I now have a need to understand the difference between pebbles, rocks, stones & boulders 🥴
thank you! they are all... compressed earth?

Loved this. I love rocks, too, and now I know why. :)

What a cool collaboration! I love date photos and the reminder that earthly elements pull us in in a mysterious way.
Thank you!

thank you! bet you any money that will be something funny in that post
It will, perfectlight!😊. You’ll see!
Rocks are good. And these are good photos of good rock!
I collect rocks. Ostensibly for the garden, but some never find their way there, and reside in the house.
Like most of mine
thank you!
