Today I will present Marcel Borgstijn, the author of Darkrooms. Marcel is a conceptual photographer from the Nederlands and the publisher of “Darkrooms Magazine”.
1. Why photography?
I am a vision-oriented person and always think in images. The fact that I can capture moments myself and use them to create my own world fascinates me.
2. What is your favourite gear? (camera, lens)
My DSLRs are actually gathering dust in the closet as I almost exclusively use my Ricoh GRII. Recently, I used my father's old Olympus Trip 35 and it still works perfectly after 40 years of inactivity. I want to use that one more often as it makes you see and photograph in a different way
3. What are your favourite subjects to photograph?
I am a documentary photographer and prefer to work with long-term projects. Landscapes, my personal environment and street photography.
4. Can you name a few of your favourite photographers?
Sure. From the past and until now my absolute favorite Anton Corbijn. I had numerous posters of U2 above my bed. Love his style. Also Stephan Vanfleteren, Daido Moriyama and since a few years I also delve more into the work of Albarran Cabrera and Paul Cupido. Different styles but so nice to look at.
5. What can Substack community expect from you/your publication in the future?
I want to continue with the weekly Darkrooms newsletters, do more interviews with photographers (have a few nice ones in the pipeline) and make specials of Darkrooms Magazine with a specific topic per issue, such as street, portrait, architecture, etc.
That was a nice surprise and I enjoyed knowing more about you, Marcel :).
I love his answer to “Why photography”, I think in images all the time. I also love Anton Corbijn’s work a lot. Thank for sharing? I thought I was subscribed to his newsletter, but I just did it again. Hmm, anyways, glad I am now for sure subscribed. :)
