Today I will present Neil Scott, the author of The Crop. Neil is a designer, writer and photographer based in Glasgow, Scotland.
1.     Why photography?
Photography is accessible. Even a monkey can take a great photo.
Photography is immediate. The gap between idea and output can be almost instantaneous.
Photography is real. It is how I have learnt to see reality.
I could go on and on, but it's worth pointing out that photography can also be none of these things if you choose.
2.     What is your favourite gear? (camera, lens)
I first got into photography with the advent of digital camera (I had a Fuji F410). I loved the freedom of digital. The freedom to make mistakes. But the camera I use 95% of the time is an iPhone 11 Pro.
3.     What are your favourite subjects to photograph?
Human beings and human doings. I love the way photography can reveal psychology and capture action.
4.     Can you name a few of your favourite photographers?
I'm a big fan of Chris Killip and Tish Murtha. The exhibition of Killip's work at the Baltic was extraordinary and everyone should watch Tish.
5.     What can Substack community expect from you/your publication in the future?
This year, I've been using my Substack as a way of teaching myself the history of photography. It has been an amazing way of learning and I am very grateful to the community for all their support. The first half of 2024 went through photographers in alphabetical order, the second half will be by date.
Very cool! But you know that. Still, maybe helps to hear it.
