Today I will present Richard Schulz the author of Richard’s Substack. Richard is a photographer, a thinker and a writer.
1. Why photography?
I used to sketch when I was younger but due to a lack of time to pursue this I stopped. I think photography was a natural progression for me. I have also had a fascination with photos, especially black and white ones while I grew up. Once the opportunity arose for photography I decided to take it with both hands.
2. What is your favourite gear? (camera, lens)
At the moment I shoot with a Fujifilm XE-2 which has a 35mm lens attached. I also have a Canon 1300D and it has a 50mm f/1.8. My first few years shooting street photos was with the Canon but the XE2 is my favourite camera at the moment.
3. What are your favourite subjects to photograph?
It has been a bit of an evolution. First I tried macro photography then moved to portraits. After this I settled into street photography. Favourite thing to shoot: empty streets.
4. Can you name a few of your favourite photographers?
I like Adrian Vila's work a lot. In terms of the 'old masters' I'd say Saul Leiter is my favourite photographer.
5. What can Substack community expect from you/your publication in the future?
I'm looking to move towards writing about my experiences with photography. I think there is a lot of movement away from the idea of shooting & posting for followers and focusing on what you enjoy in terms of photos & photography.
I'd like to say thanks to Perfectlight for sharing not only my story but also those of other photographers on the platform : ) looking forward to the next interview
Nice interview! Also good to know someone who has a variety of interests, including writing...and who uses an X-E2!
