Hey film photographer!
You, yes you. Are you willing to take part in a collaboration? The lovely Susanne and myself are doing this for more than a year and we (read Susanne) came up with an idea: why not invite other people in? It will be not only fun (trust us!) but a great way to built the community here on Substack.
What are we suggesting? A film swap, a global one! 😁
The idea is simple: each of the participants is exposing a film and without developing it sends the film to a pre-chosen person who will re-expose it and only after that develop it. The participant will end up with a roll of double expose images. The results will be published as a collaboration when we’ll have all images collected.
Is there a catch? No, no catch, just fun and a bit of challenge. You will expose the film with subjects provided to you from two lists put together by us (frame 1: a flower, frame 2: a tree, etc). We chose this in order to help poeple avoiding moments like: “I didn’t know what to photograph”. Even with people having the same subject, we guarantee different results so it won’t be boring. In order for this to work out, I will set up "The swap club" on my chat where we keep in touch and answer questions. We also think it will be easier if all of us will use a 35mm camera. And the surprise: at the end, Susanne will create an e-zine with the results!!!
From our experience we know that time will be a problem so we created a few deadlines for each step.
1. Register your interest on “The swap club” (perfectlight chat) until 31 July 2025 23:00 GMT.
2. Once the registration period is expired, you will be provided with the first list of subject to photograph and another deadline to finish the roll and post it to the next person: 14 September 2025.
3. On the 14th of September the second list with subjects to photograph will be provided and the deadline to photograph, develop and scan the film will be 30 November 2025.
4. After that we will chose a date to publish the results.
We have to mention here that you will have our support along the way starting with loading the film in the camera. All the information will be provided to all people who register. If you have any questions upfront don’t hasitate to message myself or Susanne or even leave them in the comments here.
Note: All images in this post are from previous film swaps
Wait until you and Susanne see my scheduled post for this weekend! It's so in line with what you propose here! I have done this with photographers on the west coast and it's loads of fun! I sent my contact info via the chat. Thanks to you both for the great community stir!
This sounds like a real fun project. Great initiative guys!
