Today I will present Jennifer Carr the author of In Search of Wonder with Jennifer Carr. Jennifer is an educator and a landscape, nature and travel photographer.
1. Why photography?
When I first started practicing photography more seriously, it was to have images to hang on the walls of my new home. But as I grew more and more as a photographer, I developed an incredible passion for using photographs to express how I feel when immersed in nature. What I love most about photography is the ability to take a viewer with me on a journey and to make them feel like part of the adventure. I love photographing the way that I experience the world and sharing it with others who might not be able to visit the locations that I have been lucky enough to see. My love of the outdoors has strongly influenced my photography, I feel the most inspired when I am outside, letting the calm and quiet surround me as I connect with my surroundings.
2. What is your favourite gear? (camera, lens)
If I could only choose one, it would be the Sony a7rV and the 24-70 GMII lens. I do love the Sony trio of the 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200- they are such high quality lenses and so versatile. The 100-400 is a workhorse in my camera bag, I love capturing far off sunrises and sunsets with this lens. For the past couple of years, I've been experimenting with instant photography as a creative outlet and I enjoy shooting with the Fuji Instax Wide and a variety of Polaroids. I've also started shooting film again this year and I'm having so much fun with the new Pentax 17 half frame camera. I have found that having options in my camera bag keeps me inspired and motivated to experiment and try new things.
3. What are your favourite subjects to photograph?
The natural world is my number one favorite. I love capturing color and light as it appears in nature. Sunrises, in particular, hold a special place in my heart.
4. Can you name a few of your favourite photographers?
Oh my, there are so many that it is hard to narrow it down. Peter Stout and Cole Thompson definitely top the list- I love the way they both interpret their subjects.
5. What can Substack community expect from you/your publication in the future?
Substack is a new medium for me and I'll admit that I've been slow to learn it. I love connecting with others here and the feeling of "old school blogging." I am trying to figure out a way to balance sharing on my website and also sharing here on Substack. I love pairing my images with words to tell the complete story and my goal is to really lean into that here. 2024 has been a busy year and I've had a hard time being consistent with sharing, but I am still excited to share so many stories and images that sit hidden on my hard drive.
I love the way Jennifer interprets her subjects. Great interview!
Thanks as always for the introduction and that’s a perfectly lovely sunrise (or sunset) scene over the perfect wave!
